International Conference for Academic Disciplines

Arts Conference  Organised by University of Nevada Las Vegas
2011-03-07 to 2011-03-10.

A true researcher is a rebel who challenges complacency. Our conference participants, professors and students, presenting their research over a 4-day span, will be among excellent colleagues at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) which the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has placed within its select category of Research Universities with High Research Activity.

In just half a century, as historian Eugene Moehring puts it, UNLV has been radically transformed from a dusty outpost on the south edge of town to a top-notch urban research institution. Gone are the humble origins when students used to meet for class in the dressing rooms of what was then Las Vegas High School. Today, over 1,000 full-time faculty teach over 28,000 students. The ever-growing campus has added branches specializing in dental medicine, biotechnology, and research and technology.

2011 Information Fluency Conference

The conference will be held March 9 –11, 2011 and will feature plenary sessions, keynote address, and concurrent sessions with presentations on the various aspects of Information Fluency. Learn about new and cutting edge theories in IF and see what your colleagues are doing on campuses around the world. Present your research and share your expertise.

What skills and information will students and professionals need to be successful in the coming decades?

Finding methods to more effectively manage research efforts and information sources is the challenge faced by 21st century educators. The technological and information landscape demands different problem-solving skills in order to access and manage information. Massive amounts of information and new technology are woven into students’ campus lives often without the critical capacity to understand the implications and the limitations of emerging information technologies.

The 21st Century Information Fluency Project uses the word “InfoWhelm” to describe the wealth of information at our fingertips. Dr. Michael Wesch from Kansas State University has a video titled, “Information R/Evolution” where he examines many of the assumptions about digital information. Dr. John Allen Paulos, Professor of Math at Temple University describes the internet as “the world’s largest library. It’s just that all of the books are on the floor.”
